helpful hints
When should we start?
Start early. Whether you have had some dance experience or not, coordinating a dance routine for your first dance is going to take time. Starting lessons four to six months before your wedding date will ensure that you feel confident to dance in front of your wedding guests on your special day. The earlier you start, the more opportunity for practice you will have, and the more reassurance you will feel that you can dance your steps with ease.
What dance should we choose?
Waltz & Foxtrot, the classic wedding dances, have traditionally been most popular. However, more people are considering a sensual Rumba to express their love; a provocative Tango to engage their guests; or even a fun-loving Swing to reflect their personalities. Whichever dance you choose, your teacher will work with you to make your first dance look spectacular.
Can we dance to "our song"?
If you have a special song, bring it to your lessons so your teacher can choreograph your wedding dance to the music. If you have not chosen a song yet, your teacher can help you select a piece of music that is most appropriate for the type of dance you want for your first dance.
What can we do to minimize feeling nervous?
Feeling nervous for your first dance is normal: you might forget your steps; you might step on your new partner's toes; and you know that everyone is watching. However, there are things you can do to minimize your worries:
- Practice in the shoes and even attire you will wear the day of your wedding, so that you will feel comfortable dancing in them on your wedding day.
- Practice with your song to make counting the music automatic.
- Practice with your partner, and even without.
- Take a few minutes every day to practice so that you will not even have to think of your next steps because your muscles will know them.
- Finally, dance and have fun.
Remember that this is your day. No one will be watching to see if you make a mistake; your guests are there to celebrate your life together.
